Five Things to Consider Before Becoming a Surrogate
Thinking about becoming a surrogate?
Surrogacy is a life changing journey that requires careful thought and preparation. Before taking the first step, it’s important to understand what’s involved! This includes your physical, emotional and financial readiness to become a surrogate. We will explore five key things to consider before becoming a surrogate to help you decide if it’s the right path for you.
1. Your family is complete
You and your partner are done having children of your own. While most pregnancies are safe, pregnancy always carries risks. It’s possible (though rare) that complications could affect your ability to carry more children in the future. That’s why surrogacy is recommended only after you have finished growing your own family. Surrogacy is best when your family feels complete!
2. Your mental health
Before beginning your surrogacy journey, take time to check in with yourself. Are you in a good place emotionally and mentally? This pregnancy will be different from your own pregnancies— and that’s okay. Another important consideration about your mental health is checking in with your own children and how it may impact them. It’s important to be emotionally prepared for the highs and the goodbyes.
3. Your physical health
Before becoming a surrogate, it’s important to prioritize your physical health. An important question to ask yourself is “Do I meet the basic criteria at Gift of Life Surrogacy?” Carrying a baby takes strength, energy, and stamina especially if you are already busy chasing after your own kids! Make sure you are getting enough rest, staying active with regular exercise, and fueling your body with a healthy balanced diet. It is also important to make sure you are receiving preventative check-ups with your physician. Taking care of you is the first step in taking care of someone else’s future.
4. Your support system
Whether it’s helping with your kids, pitching in around the house, or understanding when you might miss a family event, the people around you play a big role in your surrogacy experience. Make sure you have trusted friends or family ready to support you every step of the way.
5. You’re financially ready
While surrogates are compensated, it’s important to understand the financial responsibilities and timing involved. It is important to consider things like time off work, childcare needs, and unexpected expenses. Surrogates are required to be financially stable before applying to our program. This will allow no added stress and be able to focus on your surrogacy journey.
Becoming a surrogate is an incredibly generous and life changing decision. By taking the time to reflect on your health, your family, your emotional readiness, and your support system, you are already showing the care and responsibility that intended parents hope for. If you feel ready and your heart is in it, surrogacy can be one of the most rewarding journeys of your life.
